Clear & Stainless Steel Options for Growing Smiles
Orthodontic treatment is an important step in your child’s oral health journey. At Bastow and Chye Complete Dental, we work closely with parents and patients to achieve healthy, confident smiles through teamwork, planning, and the right brace option for each child.
We currently offer two fixed brace options: stainless steel braces and clear braces, both designed to deliver reliable, long-term results.
Our Brace Options
Stainless Steel Braces
Stainless steel braces are a traditional and highly effective orthodontic option. They are strong, durable, and well suited to a wide range of orthodontic needs.
Why families often choose stainless steel braces:
Why families often choose stainless steel braces:
- Suitable for simple to more complex cases
- Extremely durable for active children and teens
- Consistent, predictable results
- Often the most cost-effective fixed brace option
Modern stainless steel braces are far smaller and more comfortable than many parents remember from their own orthodontic experience.
Clear Braces
Clear braces work the same way as stainless steel braces, but use tooth-coloured brackets to blend more naturally with your child’s teeth.
Clear braces may be ideal if:
- Your child or teen prefers a more discreet look
- Confidence during school or social activities is a concern
- A fixed brace is required, but appearance matters
Clear braces provide effective orthodontic correction with a more subtle appearance.
Reaching the Goal Together
Orthodontic treatment is a shared responsibility between the dental team, parent, and patient. We aim to complete treatment within the planned timeframe, however treatment length can be affected by:
- Missed appointments
- Poor oral hygiene
- Broken brackets or wires
- Not following care instructions
Regular appointments are usually scheduled every 4–6 weeks, and emergency visits are always available if discomfort arises. Working together helps achieve the best result as efficiently as possible.
What’s Included in Orthodontic Treatment
Your orthodontic care at Bastow and Chye Complete Dental includes:
- All orthodontic adjustment visits
- Removal of braces at the end of treatment
- Clear retainers provided upon completion
We’ll guide you through each stage and explain expectations clearly, so there are no surprises along the way.
The Importance of Retainers
Once braces are removed, retainers are essential to keep teeth in their new positions. Clear retainers are included in treatment, with fixed retainers available if recommended.
Not wearing retainers as advised can lead to teeth shifting back, which may require further treatment. Regular retainer checks at your child’s dental appointments help maintain their results long-term

We understand that orthodontic treatment is a commitment for the whole family. Our team takes time to:

Braces FAQs
Bastow and Chye Complete Dental
Choosing braces for your child is a big decision. Below are answers to some of the most common questions parents ask about orthodontic treatment at Bastow and Chye Complete Dental.
What types of braces do you offer?
We offer two fixed brace options:
- Stainless steel braces
- Clear braces
Both options work in the same way to move teeth gradually and effectively. The main difference is appearance.
At what age should my child first be assessed for braces?
We recommend an orthodontic assessment around 7–9 years of age. Early assessment doesn’t always mean early treatment, but it allows us to monitor growth and plan treatment at the right time.
How long does orthodontic treatment usually take?
Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case and how well care instructions are followed. Most treatments range from 12–24 months. Missed appointments, broken brackets, and poor oral hygiene can extend treatment time.
How often are orthodontic appointments?
Appointments are usually scheduled every 4–6 weeks for adjustments. We aim to book times that suit school and family schedules. Emergency appointments are available if there is discomfort or a breakage.
What is included in the cost of braces?
Orthodontic treatment includes:
- All orthodontic adjustment visits
- Removal of braces at the end of treatment
- Clear retainers after treatment
General dental check-ups, cleans, x-rays, and any non-orthodontic dental treatment are not included and are billed separately.
Are payment plans available?
Yes. We offer:
- Payment in full at the start of treatment (with a discount for full cases)
- Extended payment plans spread over the treatment period
Our team will discuss payment options and help guide you through health fund claims.
What happens if a bracket breaks?
Occasional breakages can happen, particularly with active children. However, repeated breakages can delay treatment. Fees may apply for ongoing bracket loss, and this will always be discussed with you first.
Does my child need to keep seeing the dentist during braces?
Yes. Regular 6-monthly dental check-ups and cleans are essential during orthodontic treatment to maintain good oral health and prevent decay or gum problems.
Are retainers really that important after braces?
Yes—retainers are essential. Once braces are removed, teeth naturally try to move back. Wearing retainers as instructed helps maintain the result long-term and prevents the need for further treatment.
What happens if retainers are lost or not worn?
Lost or broken retainers can be replaced for an additional fee. If retainers are not worn, teeth may shift, sometimes requiring more complex retainers or even braces to be reattached.
Can my child still play sports with braces?
Yes. We strongly recommend wearing a custom mouthguard during contact sports to protect both the braces and teeth.
