Professionally made mouthguards are critical for prevention of dental trauma and brain injury. Compared to an ‘over the counter’ bought mouthguard our mouthguards are made from a thicker quality material and are personalised to fit your own dental anatomy and tooth shape.
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) strongly recommends a properly fitted mouthguard especially for higher impact sports. The ADA supports the “No Mouthguard, No play” policy for all sports clubs.
Wearing a custom pressure-formed mouthguard that is tailor made to fit your mouth helps to protect in the following ways:
- By acting as a defensive shield against dental trauma including broken teeth, tooth avulsion (knocked out) or tooth nerve trauma, along with the loss of teeth and dental pain
- It absorbs some of the impact from a blow to the head or jaw reducing the risk of a broken jaw or concussion
- It can prevent expensive cosmetic or complex dentistry
- It reduces trauma to the cheeks, lips and tongue
A correctly fitted mouthguard is the best choice for contact sports including Hockey, Football, Soccer, Water Polo, Baseball, Basketball, Squash, Martial Arts, Boxing and Roller Skating. It should be durable, comfortable and secure, so it won’t fall out easily.
How our mouthguards are made:
After attending an appointment with us to have an impression taken of your teeth the dental lab makes a plaster model of your teeth that is used in a pressure forming machine to ensure a tight-fitting mouthguard. Then it’s trimmed and polished. Your new mouthguard will be ready to be picked up from us in usually a week. We have a range of colours to choose from to match with your team or make your mouthguard stand out.
FAQ:
Can you have a mouthguard during orthodontic treatment?
Yes, you can have a mouthguard fitted over your braces. Sometimes early in orthodontic treatment you may need to use a guard that can be remoulded to adapt to your changing mouth shape.
Cost of mouthguards with our practice?
We offer professionally made pressure formed custom fitted mouthguards at rebate only for patients who are in a health fund, and for those not in a fund, we have reduced the cost to $110.00.
How to care for your mouthguard?
When cleaning your mouthguard use your toothbrush and mild detergent or soap then rinse with cold water and shake dry before storing it in your provided box. Do not use warm or hot water or leave it in a warm location (e.g. car parked in sun) as it will become distorted and not fit correctly. Using an appliance or denture cleansing tablet in a cup of water to soak your mouthguard in, will keep it fresh. Keep out of reach of pets and store in your mouthguard box when not in use.
