Walking into a dental practice for the first time can feel a little daunting — especially if it’s been a while since your last visit. At Bastow & Chye Complete Dental, our goal is simple: to make you feel comfortable, informed, and genuinely cared for from the moment you arrive.
Here’s exactly what you can expect at your very first appointment with our team.
A Warm Welcome From the Start
When you arrive, our friendly front-of-house team will greet you and get you settled. You’ll be asked to fill out a paper new patient medical history form, which helps our dentists understand your health background and provide you with the safest, most personalised care possible.
Our team is always happy to help if you have any questions while completing the form or need assistance. Once that’s done, we’ll confirm your details, answer any initial questions, and make sure you’re feeling comfortable before your appointment begins.
If you’re feeling nervous, please let us know — we see anxious patients every day and take extra care to move at a pace that feels right for you. Our practice is designed to feel calm, modern and welcoming, so you can relax before your appointment begins.
A Gentle, Thorough Dental Examination
Your dentist will take the time to get to know you, not just your teeth. Before anything starts, we’ll chat about:
- Your dental history
- Any concerns or discomfort you’re experiencing
- Your goals for your smile (whether that’s health, function or aesthetics)
We’ll then carry out a comprehensive examination of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. This may include:
- Checking for decay or worn teeth
- Assessing gum health
- Looking for signs of grinding or clenching
- Screening for oral cancer
If X-rays are required, we’ll explain why they’re needed and ensure they’re taken comfortably using modern digital technology.
Professional Clean & Gum Health Check
Your visit usually includes a professional clean with one of our skilled clinicians. This involves:
- Removing plaque and tartar build-up
- Polishing your teeth for a smooth, fresh feel
- Checking gum health and identifying early signs of gum disease
At the end of your clean, we will apply fluoride to help strengthen your enamel and protect your teeth against decay. To get the full benefit of the fluoride treatment, we’ll ask that you do not rinse, eat or drink for 30 minutes after it has been placed.
We’ll also offer personalised advice on brushing, flossing and any tools that could help improve your at‑home routine.
Clear Explanations & Personalised Treatment Options
We believe in clear, honest communication. After your examination, your dentist will talk you through what we’ve found using photos, X-rays or intra-oral images where helpful.
If treatment is recommended, we’ll explain:
- What’s involved
- Why it’s needed
- All available options
- Expected timelines and costs
There’s no pressure — our focus is on helping you make informed decisions that suit your needs, lifestyle and budget.
Support for Nervous or Anxious Patients
Dental anxiety is very common, and we take it seriously. If you’re feeling uneasy, we offer:
- A calm, gentle approach
- Plenty of time to ask questions
- Breaks whenever you need them
- Options such as happy gas or twilight sedation, where appropriate
Your comfort always comes first.
Before You Leave
Before you head off, our team will:
- Discuss any follow-up appointments if needed
- Provide a clear treatment plan (if applicable)
- Answer any final questions
- Help book your next visit at a time that suits you
We want you to leave feeling confident, informed and cared for.
